Dear avid readers and fellow photographers, I don’t know if you are aware of this, but ICANN – the organisation who is responsible for the Top Level Domain (TLD) names such as .COM, .NET and .ORG – has been expanding the list of the domains from around 22 to about 700! You can follow this gradual roll out of these new domains at their website where you can also check the list of already available domains.

What is this got to do with us?

Well here is the most important and relevant thing that you might want to take notice and advantage of … Some of these domains are directly related to our beloved passion!

Yup … you can now get yourself a .Photography domain name! Most Awesome!

In addition to this most valuable domain name for us, there are also other new domains that might interest you. Maybe you have a .Gallery? or you love anything to do with .Camera? How about .Photos? or .Graphics?

About time!

But why would I need a Domain Name for? What’s in it for me?

I admit that getting a domain name is not something people generally do, but if you are taking your photography seriously this is probably the best time to push it to the next level.

So here are some example of the things you can do with a domain name:

1.  You can have your own custom email address using your own domain name.  For example, instead of having a generic email address like johndoe1973@gmail.com or joebloggphotography@yahoo.com, you can have something like john@doe.photography or joe@blogg.photography.  Nice isn’t it?

2.   You can host your own photography portfolio using your own domain name as the URL.  For example: www.doe.photography or www.blogg.photography.  Very cool!

3.  Alternatively, if you’ve already hosted your portfolio in one of those paid online portfolio like Photoshelter, Zenfolio or 500px; they usually allow you to use your own custom domain name to be linked to this hosted portfolio.  Which means, instead of having something like joeblogg.500px.com, you can configure www.blogg.photography to point to your portfolio instead.  That’s really neat!

Now, if all of the above seems a little bit technical and feel daunting, don’t fret!  There are people out there that can and will help you to do these.  Or you can always contact me and I’ll do the best I can to help.  I host and manage this blog myself and am familiar with all the technical bits for creating email account using custom domain, or point a custom domain to an existing portfolio (for example my portfolio at 500px can be reached using a custom domain name jeevaphotography.com). So don’t hesitate to let me know if you need any help.

In anyway if I were you I will go as soon as I can, like now, to your favourite domain merchant and get yourself as many name as you can … before somebody else does!

Myself, I just secured some of my own at Godaddy (thanks God they are still available)! If you want you can use this link to get up to 32% off all new purchases, I’ve used this link myself and confirmed that the discount is correctly applied. For example one .photography domain costs £15.99 per year, with the discount you only pay £10.98! Also for every domain you buy you get free web email (remember point no. 1 above?). Please do let me know if the link doesn’t work or it’s not giving you the correct discount.  Equally you can also let us know if you can get it cheaper else where 🙂

Once again, the Internet Land-Grab race is on, you don’t want to miss the train! Do it now!
